Best Bassinets 2026: Five Models Compared by Weight Limit and Footprint

Five bassinets compared on the things a listing buries: the weight limit the maker sets, the floor footprint, how it opens at night, and what it takes to move it to another room. Every dimension and weight here is the manufacturer’s own.

Nursery with a bedside bassinet beside a crib

The short answer

The HALO BassiNest Swivel Sleeper 3.0 is the bassinet to buy if you want the baby within reach without giving up the floor beside the bed — it rotates over the mattress, so only the base needs space. The Maxi-Cosi Iora is the one if the bassinet has to travel, and the Fisher-Price Soothing Motions is the lowest price tier of the five.

Five bassinets, compared on the four things a product listing makes hardest to see: the weight limit the maker sets, the floor footprint, how it opens for a night feed, and what it takes to move it to another room. Every dimension and weight on this page is the manufacturer’s own, the ratings are Amazon’s, and none of these bassinets is claimed to have been tested by us.

Height42.5″ tall; HALO lists it for beds up to 30″ high
How it opens360° swivel over the mattress, plus a lowering wall
SidesMesh on all four sides
In the boxMattress pad and fitted sheet
Moving it22.2 lb, and the base does not fold
Owner rating4.4 of 5 from 540 Amazon ratings
Category rankNo. 16 in Amazon’s Bedside Cribs

The one to buy if you want the baby within reach without giving up the floor beside the bed. The BassiNest rotates its sleep surface over your mattress instead of standing alongside it, so the only part that needs clearance is the 34-inch base.

The lowering wall is the feature you notice at night: it drops so you can lift a baby out without reaching over the side. HALO publishes the unit for beds up to 30 inches high and bed frames at least 4.5 inches off the floor, which is worth checking against your own bed before ordering.

The top section also detaches and becomes a portable nest. HALO’s own listing specifies the detached nest for a supervised, awake baby on the floor only — it is a second use for the frame, not a second sleep space.

The costs are honest ones: the base is the widest here, the unit weighs 22.2 lb, and the legs do not fold, so it stays where you put it. It is also the most-rated bassinet on this page, which is the strongest evidence any of these picks has.

Sarah’s Take: This bassinet saved my sanity with my third baby. Being able to swivel her bassinet close, nurse her, and put her back down without getting out of bed meant I actually got some sleep during those brutal newborn weeks. Worth every penny.

Pros

  • Rotates over the mattress, so only the base needs floor space
  • Lowering wall — no reaching over a side at 3am
  • Mesh walls on all four sides
  • Mattress pad and fitted sheet included
  • Machine-washable cover and pad
  • More owner ratings than anything else on this page

Cons

  • Widest base here at 34″ × 34″
  • 22.2 lb and a base that does not fold — it stays put
  • Premium price tier
  • Needs a bed frame at least 4.5″ off the floor
Maxi-Cosi Iora bedside sleeper bassinet
BEST BEDSIDE CO-SLEEPER

Maxi-Cosi Iora

Best for moving between rooms — a bedside sleeper that folds flat

Check Price
Price tier: $ · Budget
Maker’s weight limit20 lb — Maxi-Cosi’s published maximum
Base footprint26″ × 38.5″ — the longest here
Height36″ tall, adjustable across five positions
How it opensSide panel drops away for night feeds
SidesBreathable mesh
StorageLarge under-bassinet basket
Moving it24 lb, but it folds flat and has a travel bag
Owner rating4.6 of 5 from 1,015 Amazon ratings
Category rankNo. 35 in Amazon’s Bedside Cribs

The alternative if you would rather have the whole side open than a swivel. The Iora’s side panel drops away so there is nothing between you and the sleep surface — for a lot of parents that reads as more connected than a bassinet that rotates into place.

It is the longest of the five at 38.5 inches and the second heaviest at 24 lb, but it is also the one that folds. Maxi-Cosi builds it to collapse flat and ships a travel bag with it, which makes it the pick if the bassinet has to move between two houses rather than two rooms.

The height adjusts across five positions to line the sleep surface up with your mattress, and there is a large storage basket underneath — the only bassinet here that gives you somewhere to put anything.

It carries the highest owner rating on this page: 4.6 from 1,015 Amazon ratings. Worth measuring your bed first, though. The Iora suits platform beds and beds without a footboard; if your bed is very tall or has a footboard in the way, the HALO’s wider adjustability range is the safer fit.

Pros

  • Highest owner rating of the five — 4.6 from 1,015 ratings
  • The whole side drops away for night feeds
  • Folds flat and ships with a travel bag
  • Height adjustable across five positions
  • Under-bassinet storage basket

Cons

  • Longest footprint here at 38.5″
  • 24 lb — second heaviest of the five
  • Hand wash only
  • Premium price tier

BEST SMART BASSINET

Graco SmartSense Soothing Bassinet

Best smart bassinet — it answers crying on its own

Check Price
Price tier: $$$ · Premium
Maker’s weight limit20 lb — Graco’s published maximum
Base footprint22.75″ × 31.5″ — the narrowest here
Height36″ tall
How it opensFixed sides; no drop-down panel
Soothes withMotion, vibration and sound, triggered by cry detection
CanopyReversible — mesh one side, fabric the other
Moving it26 lb, with a carry handle
Owner rating3.9 of 5 from 205 Amazon ratings
Category rankNo. 29 in Amazon’s Baby Sleep Soothers

The only bassinet here that reacts on its own. Sound detection picks up crying and answers with motion, vibration or sound, so the soothing starts without you getting up to switch it on. The other two soothing models on this page need you to press something.

Its base is the narrowest of the five at 22.75 inches, which is the number that matters if the bassinet has to sit in the gap between a bed and a wall. The reversible canopy is a small but genuinely useful detail — mesh side for visibility, fabric side to cut light for daytime naps.

What argues against it is the rating. 3.9 from 205 Amazon ratings is the lowest of the five, and on a page where the top pick has 540 ratings, that is the one number that should give you pause. It is also the heaviest at 26 lb, so the carry handle helps less than it sounds like it should.

Buy this one if the automation is the point for you, and accept that a 3.9 rating is a 3.9 rating.

Pros

  • Answers crying on its own — motion, vibration or sound
  • Narrowest base of the five at 22.75″
  • Reversible canopy: mesh one side, fabric the other
  • Carry handle
  • Machine-washable

Cons

  • Lowest owner rating of the five — 3.9 from 205 ratings
  • 26 lb — the heaviest here
  • No drop-down side
  • Premium price tier

Fisher-Price Soothing Motions Bassinet

Best value — vibration, sound and a mobile without a sensor

Price tier: $ · Budget
Maker’s weight limit20 lb — Fisher-Price’s published maximum
Base footprint27″ × 37″ — wide for the price
Height48″ tall — the tallest of the five
How it opensFixed sides; no drop-down panel
Soothes withVibration, sounds and a motorised overhead mobile
TriggerYou switch it on — no cry detection
Owner rating4.3 of 5 from 43 Amazon ratings
Category rankNo. 174 in Amazon’s Baby Sleep Soothers

The cheapest of the five, and the only one that gives you vibration, sound and a motorised overhead mobile without a sensor or a premium tier. You turn it on yourself when you want it, which some parents prefer to a bassinet deciding for them.

The trade-off is evidence. 43 Amazon ratings is the thinnest sample on this page — the HALO has more than twelve times as many — so the 4.3 carries much less weight than the numbers above it. Treat it as a promising signal rather than a settled one.

It is also wide for a cheaper bassinet at 27 by 37 inches, and the tallest here at 48 inches overall. That height is the overhead mobile doing its job, but check it clears wherever you plan to put it.

Hand wash only, unlike the HALO. If the lowest price tier is the constraint, this is the one to read the ratings on carefully before you commit.

Pros

  • Lowest price tier of the five
  • Vibration, sounds and a motorised mobile included
  • You control the soothing — no sensor deciding
  • 20 lb limit, same as the premium models
  • Machine-washable mattress pad

Cons

  • Only 43 Amazon ratings — thinnest evidence here
  • 27″ × 37″ is a wide footprint for the price tier
  • Hand wash only
  • No cry detection and no drop-down side

BabyBjörn Cradle

Best for a small room — the smallest footprint here, and it rocks

Check Price
Price tier: $$ · Mid-range
Maker’s weight limit17 lb — the lowest of the five
Base footprint31″ × 23″ — the smallest here
Height26″ tall — the lowest of the five
How it opensNo open side — open frame, no panel
MotionRocks on its own when the baby moves, or by hand
PowerNone — no batteries, no cable, no app
Owner rating4.4 of 5 from 370 Amazon ratings
Category rankNo. 4 in Amazon’s Cradles — highest rank here

The smallest bassinet here by a distance: 31 by 23 inches against the HALO’s 34-inch square, and 26 inches tall instead of 42.5. If the room is the constraint rather than the budget, this is the one that fits.

It is also the only model here that moves without being asked. The cradle rocks when the baby shifts, and you can rock it by hand — no motor, no sensor, nothing to charge, which is exactly the point for parents who do not want another device in the bedroom.

It holds the highest category rank of anything on this page: No. 4 in Amazon’s Cradles, with 4.4 from 370 ratings backing it up. Among the smaller sellers, that is the most convincing combination here.

The catch is the limit. BabyBjörn publishes 17 lb, three pounds below every other model on this page, so this is the bassinet you will move on from soonest. Hand wash only, and nothing here soothes for you — no sound, no vibration, no light.

Pros

  • Smallest footprint of the five — 31″ × 23″
  • Lowest at 26″, so it fits under a low window or shelf
  • Rocks on its own when the baby moves
  • No batteries, no cable, no app
  • No. 4 in Amazon’s Cradles, 4.4 from 370 ratings

Cons

  • 17 lb limit — the lowest of the five
  • Premium price tier for the least technology
  • Nothing soothes for you — no sound or vibration
  • Hand wash only

Sizes and limits

Bassinet sizes and weight limits, side by side

Model Maker’s weight limit Footprint (L × W) Height
BabyBjörn Cradle 17 lb 31″ × 23″ 26″
Graco SmartSense Soothing 20 lb 22.75″ × 31.5″ 36″
HALO BassiNest Swivel Sleeper 3.0 20 lb 34″ × 34″ 42.5″
Fisher-Price Soothing Motions 20 lb 27″ × 37″ 48″
Maxi-Cosi Iora 20 lb 26″ × 38.5″ 36″

Sorted by the smallest side of the base, narrowest first. The Graco and the cradle are the two that fit a tight gap; the HALO is the odd one out, with the widest footprint here but the only sleep surface that hangs over the bed rather than standing beside it — so its 34 inches sit under the bed, not beside it.

Every figure is the number the manufacturer publishes on its own listing, for the unit standing. Weight limits are the maker’s own maximum, not a judgement about your baby. If you are unsure whether your baby should still be in a bassinet, that is a question for your provider — this page compares products and does not give that advice.

The mattress is the one part that does not transfer between them: none of the five share a pad size. Start with the mattress and pad size guide if you are replacing one.

Method

How this list is built

We have not bought or tested these bassinets and we do not run a lab. The method is to go to the makers’ own listings and to Amazon’s own ratings, and to be explicit about which number came from where.

01

Manufacturer listings

Every dimension, weight limit and feature on this page is read from the maker’s own product listing. None of it is copied from another review site.

02

Owner ratings, quoted not averaged

The star rating and rating count are Amazon’s, as published on the date of the last pass. No rating on this page is invented, and none is rounded up.

03

No testing claims

We have not bought or tested these bassinets and we do not run a lab. Nothing on this page says otherwise. Where a number appears, it is the manufacturer’s or Amazon’s.

04

Price tiers, not prices

Models are grouped into budget bands because a written price goes stale within weeks. The live price is at the link, and the band tells you where it sits against the other four.

05

Re-checked

The update date at the top of this page is the last time every model’s specs, price tier, rating and availability were verified against the live listing.

Types

The four kinds of bassinet on this page

Type What it is On this page
Over-bed swivel Rotates the sleep surface over the mattress from a base that stands beside the bed HALO BassiNest Swivel Sleeper 3.0
Bedside sleeper Stands beside the bed with a side that opens or drops away Maxi-Cosi Iora
Soothing bassinet Adds motion, sound or vibration; the Graco also reacts to crying Graco SmartSense Soothing, Fisher-Price Soothing Motions
Rocking cradle Rocks on its own frame when the baby moves, with no power at all BabyBjörn Cradle

If the room is the problem rather than the bassinet, the compact models are the better starting point — eleven of them ranked by folded size and footprint in compact bassinets for small spaces.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What weight is too big for a bassinet?

There is no industry-wide number — each maker sets its own, and it is printed on the bassinet. On this page the BabyBjörn Cradle is marked 17 lb and the other four are marked 20 lb by their manufacturers. Whatever the label on your own model says is the number that applies to it.

What is the weight limit for a co-sleeper bassinet?

Both bedside models here are published at 20 lb — the HALO BassiNest Swivel Sleeper 3.0 and the Maxi-Cosi Iora. That is the manufacturer’s maximum, and it is the same figure printed on the product listing.

What is the weight limit for a pack and play bassinet?

A pack ’n play carries one limit for the bassinet insert and a different one for the play yard itself. The insert’s limit is printed on the insert, so check that rather than the box or the product title.

What age should a baby go from bassinet to crib?

Bassinet makers express this as a weight limit rather than an age, so the maker’s own number is the one to watch — 17 lb on the cradle here, 20 lb on the four others. We do not give advice about when your baby is ready to move; if you are unsure, ask your provider. For the practical differences between the two, see bassinet vs crib.

Is it better to get a bassinet or crib?

A crib works from day one, so the bassinet has to earn its place. What it buys you is a smaller footprint in your own room and, on the bedside models, a side that opens for night feeds. If neither of those matters to you, the crib on its own is enough — the full comparison is in bassinet vs crib.

What is a good bassinet for the living room?

One you can actually move. The Maxi-Cosi Iora folds flat and ships with a travel bag, and the BabyBjörn Cradle has the smallest footprint of the five at 31 by 23 inches, so it tucks into the corner of a room that already has furniture in it.

What is a mini crib used for?

A mini crib is a crib shrunk to roughly 38 by 24 inches, against about 52 by 28 for a standard crib mattress, for a room where a full crib will not go. It is a crib rather than a bassinet, so its weight limit is far higher and it lasts considerably longer.
